During lines 184 to 194, Portia makes a speech about mercy in an attempt to persuade Shylock to show mercy towards Antonio. First, she claims that the act of showing mercy is a blessing for both the one shown mercy and the merciful. Secondly, she mentions mercy as the strongest trait amongst the strongest. Lastly, she regards mercy as more important than the scepter and power of a King. Portia compares the two, identifying a King’s scepter as his earthly power, whereas mercy is considered a Godly attribute greater than a King’s materialistic influence. She continues, explaining how a King is most like God when he acts with both justice and mercy. Portia concludes her speech stating that justice won’t save our souls. We pray to God for mercy who in turn teaches us to show mercy. Based on this concluding point, Portia explains that mercy is important because it is what allows us to experience eternal life with God. When she says “That in the course of justice none of us should see salvation”, Portia explains that if the fate of our afterlife depends on justice, none of us will receive salvation. Therefore it is only through mercy from God are we able to accept the gift of salvation. However, in Shylock’s case, mercy is important because you are shown the mercy you give. When Portia asks for Shylock’s mercy against Antonio, he refuses to show Antonio any. Thus when Shylock’s plan backfired and he was accused for attempted murder, Portia showed him no mercy. Not only did she reject Shylock his 3000 ducats, she also sentenced him to the forfeiture of his job, possessions, and life. It was the duke, a Christian, who showed Shylock a final bit of mercy and allow for Shylock to live if he converted into Christianity and gifted his possessions to Antonio and Lorenzo.

Brainstorm:

  • Three points about mercy
    • It blesses those who are shown mercy and those who show mercy
    • It is the strongest feature of the strongest
    • It looks better on a King than a King’s crown looks on a King
      • The King’s scepter is his earthly power, but mercy is higher than the power. It is engraved in the heart’s of a King, it is a Godly attribute
      • King’s power is most like God’s power when a king acts with both justice and mercy
      • Justice won’t save our souls. We ask for mercy by the man who teaches us to practice mercy
  • Purpose of this speech is perceived by the audience to persuade Shylock into being merciful by regarding him as higher than kings and strong if he shows mercy.
  • Mercy is so important because it is our ticket to heaven. If everything is decided by justice, we won’t receive eternal life. However, as Portia mentions, we pray for mercy. In Shylock’s case, it is important because you are shown mercy by those who you show mercy towards. Since Shylock decided against showing mercy to Antonio, when he failed in his plan to kill Antonio, Portia showed him no mercy.

Mini Essay on The Three Caskets Brainstorm

Actual Document:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ND_TqU7MviZkPjhmoFeV_GREYrUz1tRoueT-U5ww3pg/edit?usp=sharing

Brainstorm:

  • The three caskets are disguises, the golden one is for someone who favors appearance over contents and fools the chooser. The silver one is for the common folks, those who are not fooled by the gold but is still too prideful to choose the lead casket which denotes a level lower than commonfolk. The lead casket based on appearance seems too shallow and plain to promise anything good, but according to Bassanio it can move/touch the suitors who truly love Portia
  • The consequences of the lottery ensure that the cowardly will not even stand the chance at retrieving all that Portia now owns
  • The man who inherits all of Portia’s assets should be someone who is courageous, who wants Portia’s hand desperately enough to undergo the harsh punishment, and someone whose meanings are humble enough to choose Portia.

“My hero is always me in ten years. That’s who I chase every day.” This quote by Matthew McConaughey perfectly sums up what life should be about. The meaning of life is for us to reach new heights. For life to receive purpose, we must always have something to chase after that is out of our reach. It is our ambition that drives us to achieve monetary success. As humans, we aren’t built to be content with the present. What we have now is merely a stepping stone for us to soldier on and extend our limits.

“We have a basic drive for growth and mastery that is expressed in a variety of specific ambitions.”(Ambition: How We Manage Success and Failure Throughout Our Lives by Gilbert Brim). Ambition, defined as the strong will to achieve something (Cambridge Dictionary), is an integral part of our pursuit of higher limits and goals. In fact, ambition is our main source of motivation to keep pushing for new heights. In the book Chasing Success by Alek Trivedi, Frank (the author’s boss) explains to Trivedi that his key to reaching the top of the ladder is by his constant desire for more. Even with his net worth sitting at 15 million USD, he strives to double his worth within three years. Like Frank, we should live our lives with an ambition that never ceases to stop. According to research on Career success: The role of teenage career aspirations, ambition value and gender in predicting adult social status and earnings, ambition value is directly linked to monetary and social status attainment. Young people who have a greater ambition value is shown to be more likely to have a greater salary and living standards when compared to their less ambitious peers. This study shows that having greater ambitions and out-of-reach aspirations tend to lead to higher levels of monetary and social success. Therefore, to be successful – which is what humans strive to be – there must be an inherent desire for wanting more and an ambition level that exceeds our current achievements. We are after all built as a hedonic treadmill.

Hedonic treadmill is a term used by emotion researchers to describe the tendency for humans to return to a base state of happiness after a major event or achievement. According to an article by The Guardian, the trends described by the idea of hedonic treadmill explains why we believe that chasing our next target will eventually and finally bring us happiness. Based on the same article by The Guardian, our brains are built with an optimistic bias, the tendency for us to perceive our future as better than the present. The phenomenon of both the hedonic treadmill and optimistic bias explicitly explains why living in the moment would never make us happy. Achieving a goal or purpose would only reap temporary joy until our emotions return to base state and leave us wanting for more. For example, “After finally publishing a book, it was depressing for me to realize how quickly my attitude went from “I’m a guy who wrote a book!” to “I’m a guy who’s only written one book”.”, claims Frank T. McAndrew, the author of the article mentioned above by The Guardian. “Results will never bring you happiness, but will only leave you craving more.” (Chasing Success by Alek Trivedi).

Results from the present is merely an opportunity for us to learn and adapt to the future. Shah, the mentor of Dr. Alek Trivedi in the book Chasing Success, emphasizes the significance of viewing our present-day tasks and accomplishments as an aid to our growth. Since what we do now won’t provide us prolonged happiness, we should instead take the chance and further support our growth with our current tasks and responsibilities. We should approach our lives “focusing on the process, rather than the result of my effort” (Chasing Success by Alek Trivedi). Results are merely a stepping stone for us to push our limits.

The meaning of life is to constantly grow and to push our limits. It is to have ambition and a drive for continued success that exceeds your current status. It is impossible for us to be content with where we currently are because results would only leave us yearning for more. Our present-day triumphs may produce temporary joy, but more importantly, it provides us with an encouragement to conquer greater victories and success. “There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level” (Bruce Lee).

Brainstorm:

Intro

Argument 1: Ambition is directly correlated with success (monetary success)

Argument 2: We can never live in the moment and be happy

Argument 3: Results from the present is an opportunity for you to learn and adapt for the future. It is a stepping stone for you to keep on pushing your limits.

Restaurant Review Rough Draft

Actual Document:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TAIRiPp55SnoYxCsBm-q-FBK70UlOpqpYtd0VQ5P5p4/edit?usp=sharing

You’re 15 and out with your friends, walking to McDonald’s for lunch, as usual. It’s already your fourth big mac this week, and you’re sick to the core with fast food. You want to experience fine dining, but your wallet doesn’t have what it takes. If only there was a place where you can enjoy well-made food and yet the pricing isn’t out of your range. Oh wait but there is! With a moderately priced menu that wouldn’t empty out your bank account and fine dishes of Taiwanese cuisine, The Night Market is every student’s best bet at fine dining.

Even with the recent fear of attracting coronavirus, the place was packed. Situated near the corner on the third floor of Festival Walk, I’m surprised people even noticed the existence of this restaurant. However, the abundance of tables and space allowed my companions and I to be seated within seconds.

Even from far away, the restaurant evoked feelings of nostalgia with its simple yet effective design. The bamboo-like furniture, white empty vases, and the green-beige color scheme brought me back to Asia in the 1900s. The spacing of tables wasn’t compact nor over-apart, and a variety of seating arrangements allowed the place to look lively and unique.

The menu included an array of Taiwanese dishes, ranging from a wide selection of vegetables and meats to rice and noodles. Our first order was the Dan-Dan Mian (88 HKD), a noodle dish soaked in rich Sichuan spiced broth. The noodles, pulled thinly and plated similar to ramen, were soft and chewy. It perfectly absorbed the spices of the broth and picked up a hint of peanut’s aroma without overpowering the Sichuan spice. The soup tasted rich and thick with a kiss of peppercorn flavor. However, the level of spice was a tad too mild for the supposedly hot dish. It was lacking the desired burning sensation Sichuan spices give off. The noodles were topped with a small sprinkle of peanuts, minced pork, and scallions which added a variation of textures to the dish.

The next dish to arrive was the Dirty Fried Rice with Taiwanese sausage (98 HKD). It was served in a black stone bowl situated atop a wooden block. The rice was fried into a brown color and topped with sliced scallions and crushed nuts. With a primary yet unexpected ingredient of garlic, the fried rice gave off both a savory flavor and a sweet taste originating from the Taiwanese sausages. Both ingredients complement each other and produce a harmonious balance between the two flavors. Furthermore, the sausage and chunks of seafood such as shrimp and scallions provide the rice with a chewy texture accompanied by the crunch of peanuts and fried garlic. The only flaw of the dish was its dryness, as I was left thirsting for water between bites.

So far the food has been pleasant and worth its price, but the Crispy Pork Chop Noodle Soup (85 HKD) was disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, the pork tasted delicious, but that was it. The pork chop was fried with a fine batter, producing a crunchy exterior that crackled every time I bit into it. It was also seasoned with a fine dose of salt and pepper, jazzing up the already flavorsome coating. Unfortunately, the noodles accompanying the pork chop was bland and boring. The noodles drowned in plain soup didn’t pick up any flavoring whatsoever, making it hard to distinguish whether the noodles were actually sitting in a broth or merely boiling water. This dish was not worth the price of 85 HKD even with the well-executed pork chop.

Our meal was concluded with sesame glutinous balls (40 HKD) as dessert. The sticky and chewy balls were smeared in a mixture of sesame and cookie crumbs, creating this hybrid of gooey and rough texture. The core consisted of a black sesame filling, which tasted underwhelming and overpowered by the taste of the glutinous exterior and crumbs.

Service wasn’t an issue throughout the meal as waiters were kind and diligent. Customers were treated with patience, the waiters were uniformed, and all our food were delivered under ten minutes. The atmosphere was friendly, with spacious tables and a decorative interior. Prices ranged from 30 HKD to 120 HKD, depending on whether you ordered a main dish or appetizer. Given the fine quality of its food and its satisfactory service, I rate The Night Market eight out of ten possible points. The dishes my companions and I tasted were delicious, but it lacks a wow factor to be deserved of a full 10 out of 10 rating.

Notes:

  • authentic taiwanese restaurant
  • respectful of our health
  • Dan-Dan Noodle Dish
    • chewy
    • pleasing spice (peppercorns)
    • variety of textures (peanuts)
    • thick broth
    • could use more spice
  • Garlic Rice Dish
    • flavourful with garlic
    • authentic taiwanese sausage
    • many textures (fried garlic)
    • sweet and a tad of salty
  • Pork Chop and Noodle Dish
    • crunchy exterior
    • rich in flavour
    • juicy/moist
    • tastes pretty fresh
  • Final Notes
    • Portions too small for price
    • Can’t find the wow factor
    • Drinks are too sweet

Mini Essay on Portia’s Speech about Mercy

Prompt:

Read and listen to Act 4 in The Merchant of Venice. Then write a brief one-paragraph essay that discusses three points Portia makes in her speech starting at line 184 about why mercy is so important.

During lines 184 to 194, Portia makes a speech about mercy in an attempt to persuade Shylock to show compassion towards Antonio. When she says “That in the course of justice none of us should see salvation”, Portia explains that if the fate of our afterlife depends on mere justice, none of us will receive salvation. Therefore it is only through mercy from God are we able to accept the gift of salvation. However, in Shylock’s case, mercy is important because you are shown the mercy you give. When Portia asks for Shylock’s mercy against Antonio, he refuses to show Antonio any. Thus when Shylock’s plan backfired and he was accused of attempted murder, Portia in exchange showed him no mercy. Not only did she reject Shylock his 3000 ducats, but she also sentenced him to the forfeiture of his job, possessions, and life. It was the duke and Antonio, both Christians, who showed Shylock a final bit of mercy and allowed him to live and keep half his estate if he converted into Christianity and gave up half his possession to Lorenzo, his son-in-law.

Portia in Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice'

Reflection:

Portia’s speech on mercy is arguably the most iconic scene in the Merchant of Venice. When I first started analyzing her speech, I was surprised by its persuasiveness and relevance to Christianity. Her points were valid, and the comparison she made between mercy and God correlated to Shylock and his Jewish religion. Albeit I did require help from Sparknotes, the actual writing of the piece wasn’t challenging as I was able to identify why Portia made her speech and the message she was trying to convey. Personally, I found Portia’s point about how mere justice won’t save our souls the most insightful.

Mini-Essay on the Three Caskets

Prompt:

In Act 1, scene 2, Nerissa says, “Your father was ever virtuous, and holy men at their death have good inspirations; therefore, the lott’ry that he hath devis’d in these three chests of gold, silver, and lead, whereof who chooses his meaning chooses you, will no doubt never be chosen by any rightly but one who you shall rightly love.” By the end of Act 3, scene 2, you’ve seen that Nerissa’s words have indeed proven true. In a mini essay of three paragraphs or less, explain the significance of the genius plan behind the caskets and how this lottery managed to land the perfect husband for Portia.

The idea of the three caskets devised by Portia’s father is a clever idea which in Nerissa’s words will “no doubt be chosen by any rightly but one who you shall rightly love”. Albeit it doesn’t guarantee Portia the man she chooses, in many ways this lottery singles out a suitor whose values and meanings are fit for Portia to “rightfully love”.

First, this lottery immediately excludes anyone who is cowardly and unfit for Portia’s hand. The harsh consequence of being unable to marry someone else after the selection of the caskets works to disqualify any suitors who are too afraid to take risks. Only people who truly admire Portia would be willing to take on such an uncertain and dastardly attempt to win over her. In Act 1 Scene 2, we are introduced to characters such as Neapolitan prince, the County Palatine, the young baron of England, the Moroccon Prince, and other possible suitors. However, only the Moroccon prince opted to open a casket, as he was the sole man within those characters willing to sacrifice his future for Portia.

Robert Alexander Hillingford (1825-1904) | 'The Three Caskets ...

The three caskets acted as disguises, with each one revealing the nature of its selector. The golden casket is designed for someone who favors appearance over the content (kind of ironic, considering the Moroccon Prince chose this casket). A shallow man who admires Portia only for her appearance and wealth. It fools men who are easily swayed by decoration. The silver casket is designed for the common folk, people who are not fooled by the cosmetics of the gold but are too prideful to select the low-level lead casket. Finally, the lead casket is designed for the humble suitor, the one deemed suitable for Portia by her father. According to Bassanio, he was touched by the sight of the lead. The one who selects the lead casket is someone who is not fooled by appearances, who is not too common and prideful, but someone who truly appreciates Portia for both her appearance and presence. The selection lottery may on paper seem simple, yet it singles out a suitor for Portia who is courageous, determined, and humble.

Reflection:

The Merchant of Venice is an insightful piece of Shakespeare’s work that I enjoyed. I was intrigued by how Shakespeare used details such as the caskets to symbolize a deeper concept. Before I started my mini-essay on the Three Caskets, I went to Sparknotes to develop a better understanding of what each casket represented. I had a basic understanding of what the gold and lead caskets stood for, but I needed extra help to decipher the meaning behind the silver casket. After a wee bit of Sparknotes research, I started writing about the representations of each casket. In my final draft, I explained the significance of the casket selection process by mentioning the symbolism of the three caskets and how this selection singled out the best suitor for Portia.

The Quality of Mercy (Flipgrid Assignment)

Reflection:

The overall experience of presenting my thoughts through artwork was pleasant and relaxing. As much as I appreciate the opportunity to write in College Writing, being allowed to represent my learning through art was refreshing. The brainstorming of what to create was almost effortless as I was covered in ideas upon the announcement of the project. After selecting an idea, I proceeded to search for templates to better help me visualize the appearance of my art piece. Then I started to draw, which was surprisingly therapeutic. The final step was to summarize how I wanted to connect aspects of my art to The Merchant of Venice and the quality of mercy. I jotted down relevant quotes on the final piece, explained these quotes on Flipgrid, and viola! My final product.

Meaning of Life Research Paper

“My hero is always me in ten years. That’s who I chase every day.” This quote by Matthew McConaughey perfectly sums up what life should be about. The meaning of life is for us to reach new heights. For life to receive purpose, we must always have something to chase after that is out of our reach. It is our ambition that drives us to success. As humans, we aren’t built to be content with the present. The present is merely a stepping stone for us to soldier on and extend our limits.

“We have a basic drive for growth and mastery that is expressed in a variety of specific ambitions.”(Ambition: How We Manage Success and Failure Throughout Our Lives by Gilbert Brim). Ambition, defined as “the strong will to achieve something” (Cambridge Dictionary), is an integral part of our pursuit for greater limits and goals. It is our main source of motivation to keep pushing for new heights. In the book Chasing Success by Alek Trivedi, Frank (the author’s boss) explains to Trivedi that his key to reaching the top of the corporate ladder is his constant desire for more. Even with a net worth sitting at 15 million USD, he strives to double his worth within three years. Like Frank, we should live our lives with an ambition that never ceases to stop. According to academic research on Career success: The Role of Teenage Career Aspirations, Ambition Value and Gender in Predicting Adult Social Status and Earnings, ambition value is directly linked to monetary and social status attainment. This study shows that having greater ambitions and out-of-reach aspirations tend to lead to higher levels of monetary and social success. Therefore, to be successful – which is what mankind strives to be – there must be an inherent desire for wanting more and an ambition level that exceeds our current achievements.  We are after all incapable of experiencing prolonged happiness if we stay in the present.

Chasing Success: Lessons in Aligned Performance: Trivedi, Dr. Alok ...

Hedonic treadmill is a term used by emotion researchers to describe the tendency for humans to return to a base state of happiness after a major event or achievement. According to an article by The Guardian, these trends explain why we believe that chasing our next target will eventually and finally bring us happiness. Based on the same article by The Guardian, our brains are built with an optimistic bias, the tendency for us to perceive our future as better than the present. The phenomenons of both the hedonic treadmill and optimistic bias explicitly explain why living in the moment would never make us happy. Achieving a goal or purpose would only reap temporary joy until our emotions return to base state and leave us craving more. For example, Frank T. McAndrew, the author of the article mentioned above, claims that after publishing his first book, he realized how quickly his perspective shifted from “I’m a guy who wrote a book!” to “I’m a guy who’s only written one book”.“Results will never bring you happiness, but will only leave you craving more.” (Chasing Success by Alek Trivedi).

The Hedonic Treadmill: Our Happiness Resting Point - Mind Mentos

Results from the present are merely opportunities for us to learn and adapt to the future. Shah, the mentor of Dr. Alek Trivedi in the book Chasing Success, emphasizes the significance of viewing our present-day tasks and accomplishments as an aid to our growth. Since what we do now won’t provide us prolonged happiness, we should instead make use of our current tasks and responsibilities to further support our growth and development. As Trivedi mentions, we should “focus on the process, rather than the result of my effort. Results are merely a stepping stone for us to continue pushing our limits.

The meaning of life is to constantly grow and to extend our limits. It is to have ambition and a drive for continued success that exceeds our current status. It is impossible for us to be content with where we are now because results would only leave us yearning for more. Reflection:

Compared to creative writing, I have always considered research papers easier to write. Thus I was quite thrilled to have the opportunity to write a research paper. However, as excited as I was, being able to decide on a quality thesis statement regarding the meaning of life was difficult. Nonetheless, after coming up with a thesis, the research portion of the assignment remained straightforward. I even found it entertaining searching for sources and quotes regarding my topic.

The Night Market (Restaurant Review)

Reflection:

The restaurant review project was quite an enjoyable assignment as I was able to meet up with friends and have tasteful food simultaneously. Doing the assignment was probably the first time I left home for weeks due to the coronavirus. The actual writing of the review wasn’t difficult, as I had a clear idea of how I liked the meal and the overall experience. Both doing and writing this assignment was memorable, as I could still remember the pleasing aura and satisfaction I received from The Night Market.

Unit Reflection and Response

1. Which of your pieces was the most challenging to write? Give three reasons and explain.

The most challenging piece of writing I have written is the SAT Essay 3. Having no prior experience with analyzing articles or writing SAT essays, I was unfamiliar with the expectations of this piece. I was confused as to whether to analyze the content of the piece or to analyze the writing of the author. Furthermore, I was doubtful of my knowledge in writing techniques. I have never been familiar with a variety of different writing styles and diction, therefore I felt uncomfortable and lost when analyzing the writing of another author. Finally, this piece was made ten times harder due to the demanding time constraint. Having to first analyze an article then comment on its writing under a time limit added pressure, as I had to process information at light speed. I was unable to manage my time well, and I didn’t have sufficient time to edit my writing and make arrangements. I read the article, and I started writing. I didn’t have time to brainstorm and to organize my thoughts.

2. Which of your pieces was the most enjoyable to write? Give three reasons and explain.

One of the most enjoyable pieces for me to write is the Sarah’s Key book review. Having finished the book, I was ecstatic and excited to share the book with others. The passion I developed for this book motivated me to write a book review on this story. I had an unlimited amount of thoughts and ideas I wanted to share. Furthermore, I enjoyed this piece more than the others because I didn’t have to create a creative and original piece of writing. As a writer, I perceive myself as more technical than creative. I prefer to write about the information I have learned rather than create new information. Lastly, I enjoyed writing this piece because I wanted my writing to inspire other readers to read Sarah’s Key. Based on the historical events from the Holocaust and the Vel d’Hiv, this book inspired me to reflect and pray for those who have suffered throughout World War II. By writing a book review, I wanted to inspire and motivate others to read Sarah’s Key, so that they may develop the emotions I experienced. And to remember and to pray for the victims.

3. What are your strengths and weaknesses as a writer? Explain.

As a writer, my main weaknesses are word choice, concise writing, and writing techniques. For word choice, the vocabulary I use in my writings isn’t extraordinary. Many times I unwittingly use words repetitively on an essay. It is a challenge for me to recognize synonyms for a word.  As for concise writing, I realized I am not the best when it comes to expressing my thoughts in a concise manner. For an idea that could be expressed within a few words, I instead write three sentences to explain. I tend to concentrate on the details rather than the main point. Lastly, I need to increase the variety of writing techniques I use. Instead of using just similes or lengthy sentences, I should attempt to communicate my ideas using magic threes, metaphors, or short sentences.

The main strengths I have as a writer are organization and voice. When reading my essays and informative writing, my ideas are usually positioned well and in order. Every paragraph has its own topic, and the main points are usually summarized in the introduction and conclusion. There is a clear introduction, properly ordered body paragraphs, and a final conclusion. Furthermore, when I write essays such as the descriptive essay or during quick writes, there is an established voice for every piece of writing. It may be anger, frustration, or awe. Each piece has a unique atmosphere to it, and readers are able to identify my emotions through my writing.

4. What have you done to develop your strengths and minimize your weaknesses as a writer? How successful do you feel you have been? Explain.

To minimize my weaknesses as a writer, I have tried to develop a desire to read more books and articles for exposure to additional writing techniques and vocabulary used by multiple authors. This would hopefully increase the variety of techniques and word choice I use in my writing. However, I haven’t been too successful in my attempt to develop an interest in reading. As much as I want to improve my writing, I can’t find the motivation to read when not required to. As a result, I am not working towards my goal of exposing myself to new methods of writing and diction.

To continue to develop my strengths in writing, I have been actively seeking for more writing prompts and essay topics to write about. When writing informative and research-based essays, I am practicing the organization aspect of my writing. When writing about topics requiring creativity or personal experience, I am continually developing my skill of adding a voice to my writing. For every non-informative nor formal writing prompt, I try to add emotional diction to my writing. As a result, I am improving my ability to add a unique voice when writing. College writing has been a great platform for me to discover new writing prompts and essay topics, which allows me to develop my strengths as a writer.

5. What kind of future career or field of study are you considering? What kinds of writing might be important in this career or field? Explain, giving specific examples.

As of now, my ideal field of study would be related to medical studies and dentistry. For this field, SAT essays and descriptive essays may be equipped. An SAT formatted essay requires an analysis of articles provided by Collegeboard, which tends to be informative. It helps us develop our skill of breaking down information and writing techniques used in articles. When studying in the medical field, students are always researching informative content and breaking down information on articles related to medical studies. The SAT essay helps students learn to break down informative articles and have an easier grasp of the content within the writing. As for descriptive essays, doctors and nurses are occasionally required to create a journal of their experience or their patient’s experience. A descriptive essay allows for writers to express the emotions or passions of the writer or an individual. For example, a doctor may be required to write a report on the experiences and feedback received from a patient. To accurately depict the subject’s thoughts and perspective, the doctor should write a descriptive essay, allowing the reader to identify the emotions and thoughts of the patient.

6. What advice would you offer the College Writing teachers as they plan this unit for next year? What might be some additional pieces of writing to add and why? How was the timing and pacing? Did you receive enough feedback? Did you receive enough instruction and input so you knew how to do each assignment? You can make specific comments about specific assignments here. What did you like or not like and why? What would make this unit more student-friendly, provide more learning, or make it more interesting? Explain.

For next year, it may be helpful for the College Writing teacher to go through step by step on how to write evaluation essays such as the SAT essay prompts. The SAT essay focuses heavily on the writing techniques of an author, thus it would be helpful for students to review over the writing techniques available or used. I disliked this assignment mainly because I was not confident in my knowledge of writing styles, thus making this assignment more difficult than it is.  An interesting piece of writing to add for next year may be a creative song or poem. This way, students may express their thoughts and ideas in a creative and amusing manner. This may be an opportunity for students who dislike and lack skills in writing long essays to clearly express their opinions. For this class, I really liked the way students are somewhat forced to read a novel of book of their choice. Many students including myself would not set time aside to read a fictional or informational novel, thus making reading a requirement motivates students to develop a reading habit.
