Brainstorm:
- The three caskets are disguises, the golden one is for someone who favors appearance over contents and fools the chooser. The silver one is for the common folks, those who are not fooled by the gold but is still too prideful to choose the lead casket which denotes a level lower than commonfolk. The lead casket based on appearance seems too shallow and plain to promise anything good, but according to Bassanio it can move/touch the suitors who truly love Portia
- The consequences of the lottery ensure that the cowardly will not even stand the chance at retrieving all that Portia now owns
- The man who inherits all of Portia’s assets should be someone who is courageous, who wants Portia’s hand desperately enough to undergo the harsh punishment, and someone whose meanings are humble enough to choose Portia.
